Ten people in one band means a lot of sound – in more ways than one.

The Uptown Swing Band’s 5-man horn section handles trumpet, trombone, clarinet, and alto, tenor and baritone saxophones between them. Add a rhythm section of drums, electric bass or double bass, piano and guitar and there is no limit to the rich sound textures possible. During a performance the Uptown Swing Band turns the spotlight on seven instrumental soloists, two “guest” vocalists from the ranks, and their featured vocalist Michele Lawrence, Peter Styles or Neil Kristian

Variety and versatility are reflected in the range of musical styles the band covers too. Listeners enjoy tributes to Swing’s golden era, 60s R&B standards, naughty novelties, jumpin’ upbeat numbers, and dreamy crooner favourites when they share a room with the Uptown Swing Band.

Whether you prefer to jitterbug till you drop, or listen and groove without stop, the Uptown Swing Band sets the vibration for your celebration.

In April 2008 Paul had the opportunity to work with Rock & Roll Royalty. Tommy Ramone dropped in with his group "Uncle Monk" to record some acoustic roots tracks and also recorded a live show hosted by the studio that evening. In the same week Albert Bouchard of Blue Oyster Cult worked with Paul recording the Canadian version of the band.
Paul was introduced to Grant Avenue Studio in the spring of 1985 and over the next 13 years he worked on many projects both as an artist and producer until 1998 when he became co-owner. Paul’s intimate knowledge of the studio allowed him to "hit the ground running" and in his first year he produced four projects.
In 2005 and 2006  Riemens was nominated  in 6 different categories at the Hamilton Music Awards.
As a recording engineer and producer, his work was nominated for "Best Pop" (Lounge -self titled), "Best Country" (Plain & Simple-The Bar Flies), "Best Instrumental " (Diesel & Smokes-Dan Walsh) and "Best Blues"(Flesh & Bone -Alfie Smith).  As an artist he was nominated for, "Male vocalist" / "Best Country".
Paul has recorded 7 albums of original material, and early in 2006 released "Plain & Simple".
His latest collection of songs "Redneck Lullaby" was recorded in late December 2006 and boasts appearances by Ritchie Hayward of Little Feat - Willie P Bennett - Lori Yates - Jessie OBrien  and Michael Fonfara of  Checkmates/Lou Reed/Rhinocerous fame.
As the in-house Mastering Engineer, Paul has mastered recordings for some of the biggest names in Canadian music. His work can be heard on Gordon Lightfoot’s "Harmony", Ray Materick’s "Greatest Hits", Keith Glass’s  "Straight Ahead", and Chantal Chamberland’s  "Dripping Indigo".
Tom Wilson and Bob Lanois enlisted Paul to master their award winning  "Shack Recordings" earlier this year. Bob Lanois  came back later in the year with his solo recording "Snake Road" (recorded with his brother Daniel Lanois) .
In collaboration with Chris Houston and Lou Molinaro,  Riemens has recently recorded sessions with Richard Lloyd of "Televison" and Cheetah Chrome of "The Dead Boys" . Together, Lou, Chris and Riemens are planning a series of Rock Legend Live Recordings at    the famous Grant Avenue Studio.

We had the pleasure of experiencing a second live performance of Bruce Herron’s Memories of Elvis. Bruce is an extraordinary entertainer and gives 110% to his audience. As an Elvis Tribute Artist, Bruce is building the foundation to the development of an entirely new generation of Elvis fans. The voice, mannerisms, the sexy Elvis dance moves, the costumes, the magnetic personality and with his own legion of faithful fans, Bruce gave a performance second to none. Being new to the ETA culture, I am fascinated by the Bruce/Elvis adoring fan relationship. Such as Elvis himself, Bruce appears to have a powerful and positive impact on the lives he touches. This gift is not something copied, however, possessed by both entertainers. I would highly recommend Bruce’s show. Crystal Scott, This was the first time that I had seen Bruce perform and he was AWESOME!!! When he walked out on that stage wearing the Gold & Silver lame jacket I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Not only could he sing and dance, he was gorgeous. Returning to the stage for his second set, Bruce wowed the crowd when he came out in the G.I. outfit and sang movie songs - I actually had goose bumps watching him!!!. The crowd was enthusiastic and it was great to see the dance floor full of so many Elvis fans. I had a fantastic night ,and listening to Bruce perform songs from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s brought back so many wonderful memories for me. I would have to say my most memorable moment of the night was when Bruce came out for his final set dressed in a black jumpsuit with a red scarf around his neck. Needless to say, the scarf wasn’t around his neck for long, I got the scarf and a great kiss to go with it!!! Some friends and I had the opportunity to talk with Bruce after his show - he was such a warm, friendly and geniune person, we’ll definitely be back to see him. Diane Brecton I’ve personally seen Bruce and he is awesome. If you ever get the chance, go check him out - you won’t be disappointed. Brenda My husband and I are two of Bruce’s greatest fans; his show is awesome to say the least. We have been to numerous shows and I must say, Bruce does connect extremely well with his audience. You are captivated immediately by Bruce’s personality, dance moves and sexy good looks. While watching him perform, you are taken back in time and it’s wonderful. I always wanted to see Elvis but unfortunately never had the chance. Bruce truly enjoys performing for his audience, and it shows. I would highly recommend you to take in one of Bruce’s shows, you won’t be disappointed.   Joanne MacDonald

  • Traditional music: The original meaning of the term “folk music” was synonymous with the term “Traditional music”, also often including World Music and Roots music; the term “Traditional music” was given its more specific meaning to distinguish it from the other definitions that “Folk music” is now considered to encompass.
  • Folk music can also describe a particular kind of popular music which is based on traditional music. In contemporary times, this kind of folk music is often performed by professional musicians. Related genres include Folk rock and Progressive folk music.
  • In American culture, folk music refers to the American folk music revival, music exemplified by such musicians as Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, who popularized and encouraged the lyrical style in the 1950s and 1960s

Formed in Hamilton, Ontario in 1985, the band started with seven members – a threepiece rhythm section and four horns. The original mandate was to cover the Rhythm & Blues and Soul music of the 1960s, but as the band matured, more complex material, such as songs by Blood, Sweat & Tears and Tower of Power, was added to the repertoire. By the early 90s, the song list covered everything from Mustang Sally to Rod Stewart. At that time, a keyboard player was added and the new eight member group now represented over 200 years of musical talent and experience.

Brent Butt was born in Tisdale, Saskatchewan (pop. 3000) on August 3, 1966- the very same day that legendary comedian Lenny Bruce died. The youngest of seven children, Brent discovered that making people laugh was the quickest way to get their attention. In an environment where sharp wits triumphed over pull-my-finger gags, Brent learned to ‘work clean’ at a very early age. However, you can only build a comedy career so far in Tisdale- and so it wasn’t long before Brent headed for the bright lights of Toronto. In a few years he went from doing 5 minutes on amateur night in Saskatoon to performing professionally for huge crowds in Canada and the United States.Brent’s style, which he refers to as “coffee shop humour”, is comfortable and relaxed. “My friends and I used to sit in the local coffee shop, literally for hours, just talking. We would discuss everything from world domination to the best kind of socks.” Butt says, “That’s what I try to recapture onstage, that easy style. The jokes naturally build and multiply in that situation. You don’t have to force them”.Brent’s career has continued to build momentum over the years. From doing Television Specials on every network in Canada (and a few cable channels) to sold out concert shows in theatres across the country, Brent established himself as one of Canada’s favourite funnymen. In 2003, he teamed up with CTV to create the hugely popular sitcom “CORNER GAS”. The ratings for the show went through the roof, averaging over a million viewers per episode - with reruns of the show even drawing in a million plus each week. The network signed up for a second season (18 episodes this time) and on Oct.5 2004, the second season opened with the largest viewing audience ever - 1.53 MILLION VIEWERS!!!Besides headlining top comedy clubs across the country, Brent is one of Canada’s most sought after entertainers for private and corporate engagements, with hundreds of clients over the years.

"When I was a young child I had a transistor radio and would get up on the picnic table in my parent’s yard and mime to Elvis’ "Hound Dog," Little Richard’s "Tutti Frutti" and Eddie Cochran’s "Summertime Blues."  Those were my favourite songs and   I caught on to a certain sense of humour that is in that type of Rock ‘n’ Roll.   I’d pretend that my school ruler was a guitar as my friends sat on the ground and laughed at my performances.  In retrospect, I realize that those songs had a big impact on me. "I lost interest a while after that and as it turned out, there wasn’t much happening in Rock ‘n’ Roll in the very early sixties.   It had all watered down.

The next thing that came to my attention were the groups of the first British Invasion.  I became a big fan of the Rolling Stones, Beatles, Dave Clark Five, The Animals and Gerry & The Pacemakers, and the New Jersey-born singer Lesley Gore.

I had some tiny drumsticks that came with a toy, tin drum and began beating  on a schoolbook to records my family bought me for cutting their lawn.   My Dad bought me some proper sticks and by Grade 7 a snare drum with a splash cymbal attachment.     Dad hooked a headphone jack into a portable record player and I   began trying to figure out what was going on inside of my favourite records.   I started drum lessons at Sykes Music in Brantford, Ontario under a teacher named Carl Lemke.  Carl was the leader of a soul band called the Delegate Review, that had two black female singers,  the Jones sisters. Carl got me into Martha & The Vandellas and The Young Rascals.  The Rascals’ drummer Dino Danelli, just knocked me over and I spent most of my time practising to Dino’s records and the Stones, "Between the Buttons." "Pretty soon my Scalectric race car set was sold in exchange for a full set of drums.

At Sykes Music , I met a kid from Burford named, Stan Baka.  A great person and as a guitarist  he was quick to figure out any song.  We formed a band with a bassist from St. George, Kevin Cosman, whom I went to North Park Collegiate (Brantford) with.  That group became John Mars and the Martians.  Stan died tragically at age 24 - hit on his motorcycle by a drunk driver.   The Martians played Stones, Kinks and Spencer Davis Group type Rock ‘n’ Roll   and we also played some blues by John Lee Hooker and even a Thelonious Monk tune.   Next we got into Lightning Hopkins and Captain Beefheart and then my cousin Chris Robinson came into the picture."  "Chris and I started to collect  50’s and 60’s small group jazz records.  My Dad had taken me to see the Thelonious Monk Quartet  in Toronto for my 16th birthday.  Chris started to fart around with his Dad’s saxophone at this time and we would hitch up to Chris’ place in Toronto and go to Sam the Record Man.  We spent all our money on records and concerts.  The Martians were a real fun outfit because we drew on influences from all over hell’s half acre. Even Albert Ayler!  At the same time we were listening to jazz, I was really turned on by soul and rock; especially Sam & Dave, When the Martians disbanded,  Mars moved to Toronto where in ‘73 he met jazz  pianist  Stuart Broomer at the Jazz & Blues Centre. They discovered a mutual interest in Ayler, Monk, Ornette Coleman among others.  They began performing in groups with some of the best of Toronto’s "new thing"  jazz players, including Michael Snow and the late Graham Coughtry.   By 1979, Broomer & Mars formed their own piano/drums duo which lasted right up to 1987. At their peak they toured theatres, universities and the art circuit relentlessly throughout Ontario, New York, Michigan and Quebec.  Their LP "Annihilated Surprise", was especially successful on public and college radio.  "Stu Broomer and I would be driving to a concert gig in the early seventies and we’d be listening to Ornette or somebody. As soon as a song got going Stu would be able to tell you who each member of the group was. Mingus, Dolphy, Ornette, Monk - whoever’s group was playing, Stu would always be able to identify all the sidemen. I’d recognize some right away, but from playing with someone as good as Stuart is, I started to learn all the subtleties of timbre, intonation and so on. Concurrently, Mars continued his Rock’n'Roll activities, deciding to step out from behind the drums and concentrate on singing and song writing. In ‘79 he formed Brian’s Children   with guitarist /songwriter Dave Templeton (Temps) and drummer Teddy Fury.  They released one single which was produced by Daniel Lanois.  Daniel has since gone on to produce Bob Dylan, U2, Emmy Lou Harris, Peter Gabriel as well as his own fine solo discs. "A lot of great front men are ex-drummers," says Mars. "James Brown, Iggy Pop, Frankie Venom, Teenage Head and Stevie Wonder are all guys who have inspired me in that respect. At some point, I just figured it was time to get out from behind all those things."  Teddy Fury hammered the drums for Brian’s Children and then moved on to found the neo-rockabilly outfit, the Bop Cats (and more recently the Royal Crowns.)  In ‘82 Teddy introduced Mars to Bop Cats guitar wizard, Jack de Keyzer at a Hamilton, Ontario concert. "Ever since then  we’ve always gotten along famously,"  says Mars.  "Each of us is an ‘only child’ and, we share the same sense of humour. We both spent a lot of time in the basement as kids, practising and listening to records and reading.  Anyway Ted introduced us and the Bop Cats do their gig and I’m just flipping at hearing Jack  play for the first time.  Through the Bop Cats, I started to remember my roots in Rock’n’ Roll.  The Bop Cats preceded even the Stray Cats in reviving ’50’s rockabilly.  Because of Teddie, Jack and Gordie Lewis (Teenage Head, guitarist) I started putting Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran and Jerry Lee Lewis on my shopping list again. Even when I was playing jazz I was listening to Rock’n'Roll. Like when you make dinner, you don’t eat one thing.  You put the meat, potatoes and vegetables all together. All things different can fit together.   After Broomer and Mars split, John hooked up with masterful guitarist David Essig. Realizing that David and John were both living near Paris, Ontario at the time (1988) their mutual friend Scott Merritt introduced the pair.   A couple of  Ontario tours followed for essig & Mars and the music reminded John that there is always more than one style to draw from. "David plays folk and blues in the style of Leadbelly and Bukka White," says Mars. "When he does a jazz trip he’s influenced by Anthony Braxton. I had met Anthony in the seventies and was flaberghasted by him and his drummer, Barry Altschul, who I once beat in a game of Tiddley Winks! Barry used a painting of mine on the cover of his "Brahma" LP.  Essig appreciated my drumming and we had similar sensiblities when it came to impovising.  He was seriously into Oriental classical and folk music and was travelling to Korea to learn to play the Kayakum. Broomer and I had been doing our folk/jazz fusion stuff like "Several Persian Miniatures" and "China" so I was already into combining ethnic folk and improvising.  There was always a certain spirituality in all of this that Chris Robinson, Broomer and myself got from Albert Ayler’s work and I think Essig got from American spirituals.  Rock’n'Roll was at the time issuing a beckoning call to Mars.   In 1986 he shortened  the Brian’s Children moniker to The Children and formed a new band with guitarist/songwriter Aurelio Lanzalone and bassist Mark Sinkowski. For a time John’s old drum teacher Carl Lemke lent them his beat for rehearsals until they were able to enlist ex-Martian Richard Tremblay an old pal from North Park Collegiate days.  The Children played basic, original Rock’nRoll with rockabilly roots and Tremblay making sure the group had a sledgehammer pulse that never belied his Keith Moon influence. The Children went through 15 membership changes in their 5 years together.  They were often lauded, while a warm up act for major concert acts, but behind the scenes their interpersonal  discontinuity defeated them. In the mid-90’s Mars met the talented young guitaist Mike Ardelli and the two soon started an ad hoc group called the Natural Born Lovers, playing rockabilly/roots.  With their mutual pal Glenn Kimberley (The Tin Eddies)   sitting in on drums, they played a series of University concerts when Mike’s promising young life was cut short by a brain tumor at age 24.   John’s old buddy de Keyzer encouraged him to soldier on. "Jack is such a great friend and of course his music has always been a big inspiration to me," recounts Mars.  "He started getting on my case, he didn’t just put a match under my chair - he put a blow torch under it!  Jack and I started writing songs and he expressed his ideas in terms of how a record should be produced for me. Between the two of us we came up with a song list and assembled a team of players. The result was the "Whasup?" album which reflected the styles of many of the orignators of the Rock ‘n’ Roll form that influenced Mars, including Eddie Cochran, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, and the Rolling Stones. In 2000, John met Lucas Stagg a then, 19 year old singer/songwriter from Cambridge, Ontario who was leading an original Rock ‘n’ Roll outfit called ROOM 101.  Lucas’ group quickly learned much of John Mars’   "Whasup?"  album and, invited him to perform with them on many of their shows.   A close friendship developed between Lucas and John and, many a-time, late at night after doing a show, the two new pals would listen to John’s considerable record collection.   Previously, Lucas had spent many  a-night  listening to records with his dad, the late Doug Stagg (1952-1999) who was a recording artist in his own right with a Rock group called AMISH in the 1970’s.   Somehow, Lucas and John each become tired of the responsibility of running a Rock ‘n’ Roll band.   One night, John played the Byrds "Sweetheart Of The Rodeo" lp for Luke and, a lot of things changed.   John and Lucas began to talk about lowering the volume and, simplifying the line-up of musicians involved in doing a show.  They began to think more about the actual singing of the songs and, the telling of the stories.   Next, Lucas introduced John to another young songwriter from the Kitchener-Waterloo area named CRAIG McNAIR and, the three began to work on the arrangements that became John Mars’  "Detroit Or Buffalo" album.

Don Cherry is not only a hockey icon; he’s a national treasure. Plain-spoken, flamboyant and always entertaining, he has become one of Canada’s most recognizable celebrities. Cherry’s wildly popular “Coach’s Corner” on Hockey Night in Canada, co-hosted with Ron MacLean, is often the most watched segment on the CBC and is a mainstay of Saturday night television. His knowledge of—and love for—our national game is peerless.Born in Kingston, Ontario, Cherry chased his hockey-playing dream as a teenager across the continent, from Sudbury, Ontario to Spokane, Washington. In 1955, he appeared in a playoff game for the Boston Bruins; it would be his only on-ice NHL appearance. After stepping away from the game, he dabbled in different careers, doing everything from construction to working as the “world’s worst Cadillac salesman.” In 1974, he was hired as head coach of the Boston Bruins, earning Coach of The Year honours in the 1975-76 season. The same year, he was named assistant coach of Team Canada. In 1980, he appeared on Hockey Night in Canada with then-host Dave Hodge in a new segment called “Coach’s Corner.” Years later, in what became a career-defining interview with Brian Williams, Cherry condoned on-ice violence in hockey, after a bench-clearing brawl during a world junior championship game between Canada and the Soviets. The move helped boost Cherry’s popularity and moved him to the front of the national conversation, where he has remained ever since. In 2004, The CBC conducted a nationwide poll of “The Greatest Canadians,” and at the #7 spot—right behind Nobel-winner Lester Pearson, but in front of former Prime Minister John A. MacDonald—was Canada’s favourite hockey commentator, the king of tell-it-like-it-is, Don Cherry.

What does Don Cherry talk about? Coach’s Corner: Live and InteractiveDon Cherry’s live appearences bring all of the energy, humour and fun of “Coach’s Corner” to major corporate and association events. Combining commentary on Canada’s national game with an extended Q&A, meet and greet and autograph session, his appearences create buzz before, during and long after an event.

Kim Koren began performing at the tender age of four, sitting on her father’s knee and singing while he strummed his banjo. From that moment on, she knew that music would be the driving force in her life. When she turned 19, her dad bought her an acoustic guitar for Christmas, and she taught herself to play by writing her own songs. Born and raised in Dundas, Ontario, Kim has a burning desire to see the world. Her music is described as a blend of country, rock, and blues.
“Growing up I loved to listen to old country and rock’n'roll. I never followed the latest trend. When my friends were listening to Queen and STYX, I had Elvis Presley and The Monkees on my turntable”.

“I was lucky enough to have exposure to big band, barbershop quartet and blues”.
Live performances are Kim’s strength. They are full of energy and enthusiasm, and reveal her need to connect with the audience. “Being on stage for me is a chance to spread my wings and soar. I completely lose myself in the songs I write” Lyrically, her songs speak of love, loss, truth, and things that make her happy. The demand for Kim’s well-written songs and beautiful voice have led to her performing across southern Ontario for the past 5 years, sharing stages with Harrison Kennedy, Dean McTaggart, Ray Materick, Mike Trebilcock, Danny Brooks, and most recently, the great pleasure of opening for Tim Gibbons with Bob Lanois, and Kelly Jay with Trickbag at the Hamilton Music Awards. Her new cd, “Sun Went Down”, was released in 2007, due to overwhelming demand from her fans. It is being hailed as “powerfully written” with “a voice that could melt butter”. The immediate response is that “these songs are well crafted and strongly presented with huge cross-over potential and pop sensibility”.
“I had a lot more control over this album, and a stronger sense of what the overall feel should be”.

Nothing ever gets in the way of this feisty chick. She will go into any performance full force, flailing herself recklessly around the stage, knocking over anything that comes in her way. Representin’ stage-right, from the urban ‘hood association of banjo players is Jill Wade. Jill was born and raised in Scarborough, Ontario but still somehow seems to have developed a sensitivity and appreciation for country and bluegrass music. As well as banjo and vocal harmonies that add to the smokin’ vocal blend in this band, Jill also plays guitar and mandolin in the show.
The youngest in a family of five talented musicians, fiddle player Libby McGrath hails from Cambridge, Ontario.
