Hypnotist Paul Anthony did his stuff last Wednesday night at Tux II for a small audience, almost too small to do a proper show, but he went ahead anyway.

I’ve seen a few of these shows and each hypnotist has a different methods of working. Anthony involved the whole group at first, then circulated through the tables and selected several people. A few were sent back to their friends.

Nobody barked like a dog or clucked like a chicken, but the audience saw impressions of Madonna, Britney Spears and Eminem.

The show was for all ages, so I took one of my boys with me. I warned him beforehand not to get on stage or he’d miss the show.

Well, Anthony selected him. I was about to put a stop to it, but then the skeptic in me let him go ahead.

My son is deaf and needs a hearing aid. The hearing aid is broken, so he wasn’t able to hear much at all. He relies a lot on reading lips. I wanted to see how far Anthony would get before kicking my son back to his seat.

Long story short, my son was hypnotized. He did everything he was asked to do while on stage (I plan to learn more about how that works). Most interesting is that my son heard Anthony’s instructions, even when he was “sleeping,” or when Anthony was facing away from him, making it impossible to read lips.

My son told me afterwards that he could hear Anthony about the same as if he was wearing his hearing aid, which could be accounted for by the microphone and amplification. But, there was music playing through the same system, which, if you know anything about hearing loss, makes focusing extremely difficult.

My son couldn’t explain how it was he heard Anthony even though he was “sleeping,” or even when he was awake. He remembered the whole thing, too, which is commonly expressed by those who have done this sort of thing. He just couldn’t stop himself from doing what Anthony asked.

So, aside from being entertained, I came away with many questions about how hypnotism works.
